Abstract

The Sumi language, spoken by the Sumi Naga tribe of Nagaland in Northeast India, embodies a profound cultural and linguistic heritage. Despite its significance, the language faces increasing endangerment due to a steady decline in the number of native speakers and the influences of modern linguistic practices. According to the 2011 Census, approximately 350,000 individuals identify as native speakers of Sumi. However, this number does not fully reflect the dilution of traditional language usage, as modern linguistic shifts continue to erode its distinctive features. The Sumi language employs a Roman-based script, adapted specifically to represent its unique phonetic elements, including tonal variations and pronunciation patterns essential to its integrity. In response to these challenges, this research project is dedicated to documenting, preserving, and archiving the phonetic structure of the Sumi language. A central component of the project is the development of a comprehensive phonetic database that captures the language’s unique sounds, tonalities, and pronunciation. This database will further encompass high-frequency words and phrases, providing an accessible and authentic record for both linguistic analysis and community reference. Additionally, the project seeks to create interactive digital tools aimed at enhancing engagement and learning among both native speakers and new learners. By fostering a digital platform that supports vocabulary building and pronunciation practice, the initiative aims to facilitate both the immediate and long-term preservation of the Sumi language. These digital resources will serve as a bridge, connecting the Sumi-speaking community and learners, and promoting the sustained use and appreciation of this endangered language in contemporary contexts. Through these preservation efforts, the project aspires to safeguard the linguistic heritage of the Sumi people for future generations, fostering both cultural continuity and educational accessibility
