Prof. (Dr.) Baharul Islam is a distinguished legal scholar and administrator, currently serving as the Registrar of National Law University Meghalaya. With a robust background in business law, constitutional law, human rights, and emerging fields such as artificial intelligence in jurisprudence, he brings extensive expertise in addressing economic imbalances, social exclusion, and the intersection of law with technology and society.

Throughout his illustrious career spanning over 18 years in teaching and 14 years in administration, Prof. Islam has authored over 41 influential research papers and book chapters published in prestigious UGC CARE-listed journals and peer-reviewed publications. His work explores critical themes including disinformation in social media, AI bias and gender discrimination, judicial independence, and rights for persons with disabilities, often influencing policy discourse and legal frameworks in India. He has also served as editor of the Law Journal at the Centre for Juridical Studies, Dibrugarh University, and contributed to shaping academic standards through his editorial and supervisory roles. Additionally, he has been invited to judge international moot court competitions and has participated in expert committees and boards, where he has chaired examination management, student welfare, and grievance redressal bodies, as well as contributed to academic senates and management boards at institutions such as the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya, Apex Professional University Centre for Juridical Studies, Dibrugarh University.

Beyond publications, Prof. Islam leads three research projects on unorganised sector workers' rights, live-in relationships, and environmental regulations in North East India. He has presented at over 30 national and international seminars on topics from AI ethics to sustainable agriculture. As an invited expert, he has contributed as a resource person in more than 10 events, including national conferences on elderly rights and human rights, international seminars on climate change, faculty development programmes on intellectual property, and workshops on legal safeguards and judicial roles, thereby advancing discourse in these areas. He has organised eight seminars and competitions on themes like juvenile justice and human rights, drafted syllabi for various law programmes, and held key examination roles at Dibrugarh University.

Prof. Islam served as a translation and review expert for the Third Edition (as on September 2025) of the official Assamese translation of The Constitution of India, published by the National Translation Mission (NTM) and Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru, on behalf of the Legislative Department, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India; contributed to linguistic precision and seamless integration of constitutional amendments, thereby promoting greater accessibility of India's foundational legal text to Assamese-speaking audiences.

As a dedicated research supervisor, Prof. Islam has guided four (4) Ph.D. to successful award, with six more scholars currently under his mentorship, alongside supervising 37 LL.M. dissertations. His prior roles as Professor and Dean at the University School of Law and Research, University of Science & Technology Meghalaya, and as Head of School at Apex Professional University, underscore his commitment to fostering innovative legal education.

Prof. Islam's scholarly output is prolific and impactful, encompassing analyses of contemporary socio-legal issues. His recent contributions delve into AI's legal implications, ethical frameworks for human rights-respecting AI, biases in AI systems, threats from disinformation to fundamental rights, regulatory measures against digital harms, vulnerabilities faced by women with disabilities, and inclusive protections for persons with disabilities. Earlier works, inspired by his Ph.D. on freedom of trade under the Indian Constitution, examine comparative policy studies, social exclusion, judicial accountability, and women's rights.

Prof. Islam's academic philosophy centres on the dynamic evolution of law to mitigate societal imbalances, integrating traditional juridical practices with modern challenges like digital addiction etc. With profound experience in teaching, research, and institutional governance, he remains devoted to nurturing forward-thinking legal professionals equipped to navigate India's complex socio-legal landscape.
