HON’BLE JUSTICE S. VAIDYANATHAN

Justice S. Vaidyanathan is a highly respected legal personality in India, who served as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya and Chancellor of National Law University Meghalaya. He was born on August 17, 1962 at Coimbatore and has undergone his schooling in Chennai. He completed his graduation in B.A. (Economics) at D.G. Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam during 1979-1982 and joined B.L. in Madras Law College (now known as Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College) in the year 1982 and after receiving his Post Graduate Diploma in Personal Management, Labour Welfare and Industrial Relations in 1986, he enrolled as an Advocate in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on August 27, 1986 and became a Lawyer.

Justice S. Vaidyanathan started his career in the High Court of Judicature at Madras, where his paternal grandfather late L.S. Vaidyanathan served as a Superintendent in the Copyist Section and retired in the year 1952. Justice S. Vaidyanathan's father late Sri. V. Subramanian was a Shoe Polish Seller and later grew to be a committed Trade Unionist. His father was the root cause for formation of a Union called the first White-Collared Employees’ Union in 1946, viz., Madras Commercial Employees Union in the city of Madras. Justice S. Vaidyanathan also served as an Editor of Labour Law Books published by Madras Book Agency and was subsequently, elevated as an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court on 25.10.2013 and became a permanent Judge on 14.04.2015. For a short term, he was the Acting Chief Justice of the Chartered High Court.

Justice Sanjib Banerjee is a highly respected legal personality in India, who served as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya and Founding Chancellor of National Law University Meghalaya. He was born on November 2, 1961, and attended St. Xavier's Collegiate School in Calcutta and St. Paul's School in Darjeeling.

Justice Banerjee completed his Bachelor of Science with Honours in Economics and LL.B. from the prestigious University of Calcutta in 1983 and 1986-87, respectively. He started practicing law as an advocate on November 21, 1990.

Throughout his career, Justice Banerjee has acquired significant experience in a variety of legal areas, including Civil, Company, Arbitration, Constitutional Law, and Corporate and Intellectual Property Law. He primarily practiced law in the High Court at Calcutta and other High Courts and Tribunals in India.

He was appointed as a permanent Judge in the High Court of Calcutta on June 22, 2006, and has delivered judgements on a variety of public interest litigations and almost all legal disciplines. Later, on January 4, 2021, he was named Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, and on November 24, 2021, he took oath as Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya.

Justice Banerjee, as Chancellor of the National Law University Meghalaya, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise that will surely shape the future of legal education in the region. He is a legal luminary with a strong commitment to justice, and his services to the legal community are noteworthy.
