PROF. ALAK KUMAR BURAGOHAIN

Professor
Alak Kumar Buragohain was born in Shillong in 1956. Prof. Buragohain completed
his early education in Shillong and graduated from the Saint Anthony’s College,
Shillong with a First Class First position in Botany (Honors) from Northeastern
Hill University in 1975.He did his Post Graduation from Gauhati University in
Botany. After a stint at Handique Girls College, Guwahati as a Lecturer, Prof.
Buragohain left for England on an overseas Fellowship to do his Ph. D in Plant
Molecular Biology at Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine,
London. After his Ph. D from the University of London and the DIC in Plant Virology
from Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine, London. Prof.
Buragohain returned to India and joined the Gauhati University as a Reader.
Soon Prof. Buragohain was appointed as the Founder Head of the Department of
Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at Tezpur Central University in 1997 where
he was serving till 2013 as a professor and as the Registrar of the University.
Prof. Buragohain established the Centre for Petroleum Biotechnology at Tezpur
Central University. Prof. Buragohain had a brief stint for a year at the
Department of Botany and Biotechnology of the Tocklai Experimental Station of
the Tea Research Association, Jorhat. In 2013, he was appointed as the Vice
Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, one of the two oldest state Universities of
the northeastern region, for a period of five years.
Prof.
Buragohain served as an Independent Director on the Board of Brahmaputra Valley
Fertilizer Corporation, Govt of India for a term of five years. He is at
present serving as the Chairperson (Academic) at the Assam Royal Global
University Guwahati, a premiere private University in the Northeast India.
Prof. Buragohain has extensive experience in Higher Education, Research and
Academic Governance. He has around 100 research publications in International
and National Journals of repute. He has also served as members on many
committees of the Government of India. Recently Professor Buragohain has been made
a member on the core committee constituted by the Northeastern Council (NEC), Ministry
of Development of Northeast Region, Govt of India for developing the Vision
Document-2047 for the Northeast Region.
