U Meghalaya: Redefining Legal Education for a Changing World

NLU Meghalaya has been established with a vision to pioneer legal education reforms and to contribute meaningfully to the transformation of India’s legal landscape through rigorous research and policy interventions.

While most law Universities in the country achieve a standard in teaching pedagogies, legal research needs more intensity. To compete with global legal research output and make legal research relevant to contemporary society NLU Meg focus on evidence-based research and propose solutions commensurate with the country’s needs.

From the Vice Chancellor’s Desk: A Vision for Excellence

Mooting at NLU Meg is more than competition—it is a test of legal acumen, advocacy, and the pursuit of justice. As participants, you will engage with complex legal issues, voice the concerns of the marginalized, and uphold the principles of equality and human rights.

Embrace this challenge with passion, humility, and respect for diverse perspectives. Let this moot be a testament to your potential as future changemakers and vanguards of the legal fraternity. We look forward to witnessing your talent, dedication, and unwavering commitment to justice.

Best wishes,
Prof. Indrajit Dube
Vice Chancellor, NLU Meghalaya

Moot Court Society, NLU Meghalaya | Advocating Excellence

The Moot Court Society (MCS) of National Law University Meghalaya (NLU Meg) is a cornerstone of legal education, providing students with essential practical experience through simulated court proceedings. Moot Court Society (MCS) is a critical aspect of the legal education at many law schools, including NLU Meghalaya. Moot court activities are simulated court proceedings where students draft briefs or memorials and participate in oral arguments. The society typically organizes various moot court competitions, workshops, and training sessions to help students enhance their advocacy skills, legal research, and drafting abilities.

At NLU Meghalaya, the MCS plays a vital role in preparing students for national and international moot court competitions, offering rigorous training and resources. It is responsible for selecting and training teams, providing resources, and ensuring that the participants are well-prepared to represent the university.

Building on the success of our inaugural National Moot Court Competition in March 2024, the society has expanded into two committees—National and International—enabling it to focus on competitions at both levels. Through these initiatives, the society not only hones students' legal reasoning and advocacy skills but also aims to position NLU Meghalaya as a hub for legal discourse and cross-cultural understanding.

Moot Court Training Sessions

We regularly organize moot court training sessions to help students develop essential mooting skills, including legal research, drafting, and oral advocacy. These sessions are designed to refine analytical thinking, enhance courtroom presentation, and instil confidence in law students as they prepare for national and international moot court competitions. Mooting is also an integral part of the students' curriculum, where they receive structured training from esteemed faculty members and are evaluated on their advocacy skills.

As part of this initiative, on August 31, 2024, we had the privilege of attending an exceptionally enlightening moot court training session conducted by Rishab Sancheti Sir. Throughout the session, he provided invaluable insights into drafting a compelling memorial, meticulously explaining research methodologies essential for constructing a well-founded legal argument. He emphasized the importance of a structured approach to legal reasoning, clarity, precision, and strategic structuring in legal submissions.

With the guidance of our esteemed law faculty and distinguished guest experts, we strive to hone the advocacy skills of our students, preparing them to excel in the realm of legal practice and mooting.
