Ethics Committee
Introduction
The Ethics Committee (EC) at National Law University Meghalaya (NLU
Meghalaya) is a multidisciplinary body dedicated to ensuring that all research
conducted under the university’s auspices adheres to the highest ethical
standards. This commitment to ethical research is essential for maintaining
integrity, protecting research participants, and upholding the university’s
reputation.

Roles and Responsibilities
The EC is responsible for the following key functions:
- Review
and Assessment: Evaluate research proposals to ensure
they comply with ethical standards and relevant guidelines such as the
Belmont Report, ICMR National Ethics Guidelines, and ICH-GCP guidelines.
- Protection
of Rights: Protect the rights, safety, and
well-being of research participants.
- Guidance
and Support: Provide researchers with guidance on
ethical research conduct, ensuring that their methods and procedures align
with ethical principles.
- Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality regarding research proposals and
related data.

Submission and Review Process
Researchers at NLU Meghalaya are required to submit their research
proposals for ethical clearance before commencing any research activities. The
submission process involves:
- Completing
a detailed research proposal form.
- Providing
comprehensive information on research objectives, methods, participant
recruitment, informed consent procedures, data storage, and potential
risks and benefits.
The EC reviews proposals in a timely manner and communicates decisions
or required revisions to the researchers.
Appeal Process
Researchers have the right to appeal EC decisions if their proposals are not approved. The appeal process involves submitting a written appeal addressing the EC’s concerns to the Vice Chancellor and his/her decision will be final.
Continuous Improvement
The EC periodically reviews and updates its Standard Operating Procedure
(SOP) to incorporate evolving best practices in research ethics, ensuring that
the committee remains at the forefront of ethical oversight.
