CHANCELLOR
HON’BLE JUSTICE S. VAIDYANATHAN
Justice S. Vaidyanathan is a highly respected legal personality in India, who
currently serves as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya and
Chancellor of National Law University Meghalaya. He was born on August 17, 1962
at Coimbatore and has undergone his schooling in ChennaI. He completed his
graduation in B.A. (Economics) at D.G. Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam during
1979-1982 and joined B.L. in Madras Law College (now known as Dr. Ambedkar
Government Law College) in the year 1982 and after receiving his Post Graduate
Diploma in Personal Management, Labour Welfare and Industrial Relations in 1986,
he enrolled as an Advocate in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on
August 27, 1986 and became a Lawyer.
Justice S. Vaidyanathan started his career in the High Court of Judicature at
Madras, where his paternal grandfather late L.S. Vaidyanathan served as a
Superintendent in the Copyist Section and retired in the year 1952. Justice S.
Vaidyanathan's father late Sri. V. Subramanian was a Shoe Polish Seller and later grew to
be a committed Trade Unionist. His father was the root cause for formation of a
Union called the first White-Collared Employees’ Union in 1946, viz., Madras
Commercial Employees Union in the city of Madras. Justice S. Vaidyanathan also
served as an Editor of Labour Law Books published by Madras Book Agency and was
subsequently, elevated as an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court on 25.10.2013
and became a permanent Judge on 14.04.2015. For a short term, he was the Acting
Chief Justice of the Chartered High Court.
