HON’BLE MR JUSTICE INDRA PRASANNA MUKERJI
CHIEF JUSTICE, HIGH COURT OF MEGHALAYA, & CHANCELLOR, NATIONAL LAW UNIVERSITY MEGHALAYA
Hon’ble Mr. Justice I. P. Mukerji is a highly respected legal personality in India, who currently serves as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya and Chancellor of National Law University Meghalaya. Born on September 6, 1963, he comes from a family deeply immersed in the legal profession. His father and paternal grandfather were both barristers and senior advocates at the Calcutta High Court, while his maternal grandfather was a senior lawyer at the Kanpur District Court. He completed his education at St. Xavier's School and College in Calcutta and earned LL.B. degrees from both the University of Calcutta and the University of London through external examination. Enrolled as an advocate on July 2, 1990, Justice Mukerji practiced at the Calcutta High Court, focusing on civil law, particularly revenue and arbitration matters. At the time of his elevation to the bench, he served as Senior Panel Counsel for the Government of India and the Damodar Valley Corporation. In 2005, he also briefly taught at the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata, and was a member of the I.L.R. Committee of the High Court and the General Committee of the Bar Library Club.
Justice I. P. Mukerji was elevated to the bench of the Calcutta High Court as a Permanent Judge on May 18, 2009. On September 21, 2024, he was appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, and took oath on October 3, 2024. His Lordship’s distinguished career in civil law, combined with his contributions to the legal profession and academia, marks him as a highly respected figure in the Indian judiciary.
